This is where it all began for me . I remember going to see John Henton perform at the Comedy Act Theatre on Peachtree Street and being bitten by the comedy bug and I've been infected with wanting to bring laughter to crowds every since. He was kind enough to help me get on the amatuer open mic show the following week.
There I met and became friends with some of today's most talked about comedians, Earthquake, Arnez J , Bruce Bruce , DC Curry , Chocolate and Chris Tucker were just a few of my fellow amatuers that frequented the club every Tues. night . Now that we have all grown up and have our feet underneath us its always great to come back to the city that birthed our careers . I'm happy that The Uptown is back in business after closing its doors for about a year leaving what i felt was a great void in the comedy universe. The Scene
Within seconds of stepping into this dark, hole-in-the-wall of a club, you start to feel the energy, from the crowd, the performers and the DJs. Surrounding Uptown's tiny stage sit girlfriends, husbands, wives, sisters, brothers, cousins and co-workers--all laughing with and at one another. In addition to the sidesplitting laughter, patrons get to groove between sets, sometimes during sets, to the DJ's hip-hop and R&B mixes. Servers squeeze their way through the barely-there aisles to take orders and deliver the required two menu items while deflecting barbs from the comics on stage.
The Draw
The best black comedy club in the city. Comedy elite such as Earthquake, Cortney Gee( from BET Comicview and The Jamie Foxx Show), Chocolate, Bruce Bruce (host of BET's Comic View), Bro Man (from T.V.'s "Martin"), Don "D.C." Curry and movie stars Mike Epps ("All about the Benjamins") and Chris Tucker ("Rush Hour") got their start here. Even comic legend Dolemite earned his laughs at Uptown.
