The World Needs Heroes...
When I was growing up and had passed the phase of thinking Batman and the rest of the Super Friends was cool ( ok so I've revisited that period since Hollywood has made a mad effort to bringing them to the big screen) I looked toward the ABA/NBA for the people I would idolize and try to emulate.
Yeah the J5 were the reason for me to grow a fro' but it was Dr. J
that made me want the big blow out!!!
I was so into the graceful forward from the U of Mass that my bedroom wall was a tribute to him and his aerial attacks on the hoop. This was the time in my life when my taste in shoes had changed as well. No longer was I satisfied with canvas Chuck Taylor's I wanted the pro leather ones worn by my heroes... Julius Erving and
The Iceman" George Gervin"

I'll never forget the answer my mother gave me when I was begging for some $30 shoes. She was like Dr. J and The Iceman have jobs you show me you can score 30 points in some canvas shoes and maybe I'll think about it. She didn't have to say anything else ... she fueled my gunners spirit and on my next game I launched shots from every spot on the court. I didn't score thirty points but I did show her I was more than some kid trying to just be like a hero of mine but had the potential to be quite the hero myself. After the game we made our way to Value City and she found me some irregular doc's for half price . One of my feet didn't fit comfortably but that didn't keep me from sporty them bad boys the rest of the season.
My sons are at the age were they want shoes that their heroes wear. Miles wanted some D Wade's ... I went online to purchase them and was astounded to find that they were 100.00
. Took a page from my mom's book of wisdom , I was like Miles pull a Wilt Chamberlain and post 100 points and I got you.
